Painting workshop some afternoons
Coordinated by Inés Beninca
Paintings feature areas of encounter and separation. They are surfaces that touch each other, that we caress with the brush or our fingers, and that, over time, form delimited geographical spaces where color resides in the act of imagining, and imagination resides in the realm of detail. Their time is the pure pause between brushstrokes and their unthinking continuation.
What we paint must have to do with what we see, or what we encounter. Or what we idealize. This world is the work of the surrounding neighborhood. It is formed by the passing of the simple faces of people we encounter on a daily basis.
A painting workshop is a living space, a meeting place for the material and a personal act. It embraces the flirtation with the amateur gesture and the charm of those who feel confident in their movements. The clarity of the decisions made, and also what we do for no reason, sustains the painting.
What we generally see is a painter lost in his studio. But a studio may not be a factory, permeated by steam and repetitive gestures. Something happens when the action of painting is shared. There is someone else who resembles me, but is not me. In this workshop, I propose to dilute the intimate and, as a group, revisit the doubt in the mixtures and the discussion about those same doubts. The result of these encounters is nothing more than paintings. The result will be a few afternoons.
